The Price Slasher Enters the Small EV Ring
Leapmotor has earned a reputation as the "price butcher" of China's EV market. Now, it's set its sights on the sub-100,000 yuan segment with the A05, a compact hatchback that starts at just 63,900 yuan (about $8,800). But this isn't your typical budget EV. The A05 is a statement: small cars don't have to be stripped-down appliances.
For years, affordable electric cars in China were purely utilitarian—cheap, small, and just capable enough for city commutes. Buyers cared about shelter from rain and low running costs, not design or tech. But the market has shifted. More young people are buying EVs as their first car, and they expect more: style, space, range, and intelligence.
Design That Says Something
The A05 measures 4,200mm long, 1,800mm wide, and 1,560mm tall, with a 2,605mm wheelbase. It's a city car through and through, with a 4.9-meter turning radius that makes navigating narrow alleys and cramped parking lots a breeze. But it doesn't look boring. The body is curvy, with a floating roof, a wide rear, and three-section "mood lighting." Paint options like Morgan Pink, Frosted Rice, and Seaweed Green add personality.
There's also an A05s special edition with a two-tone pink-and-black scheme, 17-inch wheels, faux suede seats, and a more premium interior. It's a clear attempt to offer emotional value, not just transportation.
Space: The Hidden Superpower
Inside, the A05 surprises. Thanks to cell-to-chassis (CTC) battery integration and a compact front compartment, Leapmotor claims a remarkable 88.4% space efficiency. Rear headroom is 965mm, which is impressive for a car this size. The cabin features an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch 2.5K central touchscreen, wrapped in soft-touch materials.
But the real trick is storage. The trunk holds 474 liters, expandable to 1,308 liters with the rear seats folded. There's also a 91-liter washable storage bin underneath—perfect for wet tents, muddy shoes, or groceries. Under the rear seats, you'll find another 32 liters. Some versions let you flip the rear seat cushions up or fold the front passenger seat flat, creating space for long items, a rest area, or even a pet zone. This is clever, practical engineering.
Range and Charging: No Compromise
Leapmotor offers two battery options. The 405 version packs a 39.8kWh battery and a 70kW motor, delivering 405km of CLTC range. Fast charging from 30% to 80% takes about 30 minutes. The 510 version ups the ante with a 53kWh battery and a 90kW motor, achieving 510km of range, and can charge from 30% to 80% in just 16 minutes. That's fast for this class.
While the top speed is limited to 160km/h, the A05 isn't about performance. It uses an oil-cooled electric drive and a motion control system to smooth out acceleration, steering, and braking. A ZF Onebox brake system and comfort stop function aim to reduce jerky stops—a common complaint in budget EVs.
AI and Autonomy: The Real Differentiator
Where the A05 really shakes things up is in AI and automation. The base 405 Comfort version includes adaptive cruise control, lane centering, automatic emergency braking, a 360-degree camera, and parking assist. But the top trims—the 510 LiDAR version and 510S—take it to another level. They come with a Qualcomm 8650 platform, a LiDAR sensor, and a full suite of perception hardware, enabling highway and city navigation assist, memory parking, and even curb-to-curb autonomous driving.
In the cabin, the first three versions use the older Qualcomm 8155 chip, while the LiDAR versions upgrade to the 8295, which powers a 12-speaker audio system and karaoke. Leapmotor's OS now integrates AI large language models, supporting continuous conversation, dialect recognition, and child-friendly dialogue. Higher trims even allow "see it, say it" voice control.
Safety: Layered, Not One-Size-Fits-All
Safety follows a similar tiered approach. All versions have a high-strength cage body and CTC 2.0 Plus technology. The mid-range Comfort Plus adds side curtain airbags and more active safety features. The LiDAR versions go further with advanced emergency steering assist (AES). It's a smart way to offer value without compromising basic safety.
But here's the catch: those headline features—LiDAR, the 8295 chip, and curb-to-curb assist—aren't standard. They're reserved for the top trims. So don't get blinded by the 6.39万 starting price. You'll pay more for the full tech experience.
The Bigger Picture: From Cheaper to Complete
The A05's real significance isn't its price—it's what it represents. In a market flooded with cheap EVs, Leapmotor is trying to offer a car that's affordable yet complete: good design, flexible space, solid range, and AI features that were once reserved for luxury models.
This shift matters because EVs are increasingly becoming families' primary cars. They need to handle daily commutes, weekend trips, school runs, and hauling gear. A car that's just cheap won't cut it anymore. The A05 attempts to bridge that gap.
What About "Female-Focused" Marketing?
Leapmotor is also targeting young women with this car. But instead of just adding pink paint and makeup mirrors, they've focused on practical needs: a small body, tight turning radius, easy parking, smart storage, and a healthy cabin. These features benefit not just women but all new drivers who might be intimidated by bigger cars. It's a more thoughtful approach than the superficial "female car" labels we've seen from other brands.
The AI Automation Trend Reaches Entry-Level
The A05 is a sign that AI automation is trickling down to budget segments. High-performance chips, LiDAR, and advanced driver assistance are no longer exclusive to 300,000-yuan EVs. Now they're appearing in cars under 100,000 yuan. This redefines what's possible in entry-level EVs.
But hardware is just the first step. The real test is execution: Will the autonomous driving be reliable? Will the software get updates? Will service keep up with sales? These questions will determine whether "tech for everyone" is a lasting reality or just a launch-day buzzword.
Trade-offs and Doubts
The A05 isn't perfect. Performance is modest, and Leapmotor mixes battery cells from two suppliers—Gotion High-Tech and Jiangsu Zhenli—which some might see as a cost-cutting measure. Ride quality, noise insulation, and the maturity of the driver assistance systems remain unproven. But the A05 at least proposes a direction worth applauding: limited budget doesn't have to mean limited thinking.
By pushing 500km range, flexible space, AI cabins, and advanced assist into this price bracket, the A05 raises the bar for competitors. They can no longer rely on low prices and basic transportation. The future of small EVs will be about who can balance constraints and needs most intelligently—not just who's cheapest.
In an industry that's already moved past "getting from zero to one," the next step isn't more low-cost options. It's fewer compromises. The A05 is a step in that direction.
