The Price War Just Got Smarter
On August 11, BYD launched the 2027 Seagull 06 in Shenzhen. The new model rolls out in two flavors—DM-i hybrid and EV—with prices starting at just 99,900 yuan ($14,000) for the hybrid base trim. That's not a typo. For less than the price of a well-optioned Toyota Corolla in China, you now get a B-segment sedan with a LiDAR sensor on its roof and a suite of AI-assisted driving features.
The Seagull 06 isn't a niche experiment. It's BYD's attempt to bring advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to the volume segment—the cars most Chinese families actually buy. And it's a direct challenge to rivals like the Qin series, which BYD also sells under its Dynasty network. The two lines compete head-to-head, and BYD is betting that adding AI tech to a budget sedan will win back buyers who've been drifting toward cheaper models.
From C to B: The Assisted Driving Ladder
BYD divides its "God's Eye" ADAS suite into three tiers: A, B, and C. The Seagull 06's previous generation used the C tier, which handles highway cruise and automated parking. The new model jumps straight to the B tier, adding a high-resolution LiDAR unit alongside cameras, millimeter-wave radar, and an end-to-end deep learning model. The big upgrade is city navigation assist—the system can now handle urban streets, not just highways.
In practice, the B tier lets the car follow navigation routes on highways and city expressways, manage lane changes, avoid obstacles, and take exits. Once you're in the city, it can handle stop-and-go traffic, choose lanes, and navigate intersections. And when you're done, the all-scenario parking assist takes over. For a family sedan, this means less fatigue on long drives and a smoother commute. It's AI doing the mundane work—and BYD is making it standard at a price point where it used to be a luxury option.
The B tier isn't just about adding LiDAR. It's the software stack that matters. BYD says the system uses an end-to-end model trained on massive datasets, which allows it to handle complex urban scenarios without hand-coded rules. That's a shift from traditional ADAS, which relies on explicit programming. The result is a system that feels more human—and more capable.
Bigger Battery, Faster Charging, Same Pocket-Friendly Price
Beyond the AI, the Seagull 06 gets a hardware refresh. The EV version now comes with two motor options: 120 kW and 240 kW. The high-power motor cuts 0-100 km/h sprint to 5.9 seconds, which is quick for a family sedan. The battery uses BYD's second-generation blade cell, enabling what the company calls "flash charging." According to the launch event, the car can go from 10% to 70% charge in just 5 minutes, and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes. Even at -30°C, charging time only adds 3 minutes. For the first year, BYD is waiving the flash charging fees—a nice perk that lowers the total cost of ownership.
Range is solid too: 530 km or 630 km on the CLTC cycle, depending on the variant. The hybrid version, meanwhile, sticks with the fifth-generation DM technology, offering up to 320 km of pure electric range and a combined range of over 2,370 km. That's enough to cross China without stopping for fuel.
Safety Meets AI: The Blowout Stability System
One of the more interesting safety features is the standard high-speed tire blowout stability control. If a tire bursts at speed, the system rapidly adjusts the braking and drive torque on the other wheels to keep the car stable. BYD claims it passed a 140 km/h blowout test. It's a clever use of AI to react faster than a human driver, and it's now standard across all trims. That's the kind of tech you'd expect on a premium car, not a 100,000-yuan sedan.
Smart Cabin: DeepSeek and a 15.6-Inch Screen
The cabin also gets an AI boost. The DiLink 150 infotainment system now integrates DeepSeek, a large language model that understands natural language and supports multi-turn conversations. You can talk to the car as you would to a friend, and it'll adjust the climate, find a restaurant, or answer questions. The 15.6-inch rotating screen is standard on higher trims, and a W-HUD projects key info onto the windshield.
Seats up front offer heating and massage on top trims—a small luxury that makes a difference on cold winter commutes. The EV version even adds a 115-liter front trunk, giving you extra storage for groceries or a weekend bag. It's the kind of practical thinking that makes a car feel more than just a mode of transport.
Twelve Trims: A Config Maze That Actually Makes Sense
BYD offers 12 trims across the two powertrains—six for the EV, six for the DM-i. At first glance, that's overwhelming. But the lineup follows a clear logic. The base "Shuxiang" trim (only on the 530 km EV and 230 km DM-i) keeps the entry price low. The next tier, "Zhixiang," adds the C-tier ADAS, plus driver fatigue monitoring, electric seats, and rain-sensing wipers—stuff you'd want for daily use.
The "Zunxiang" trim introduces the cloud-chassis C (Yunyi-C) adaptive damping system, which adjusts suspension in real time based on road conditions. It also throws in a panoramic sunroof and the 15.6-inch screen. Finally, the "Qijian" flagship, available only on the 630 km EV and 320 km DM-i, bundles the full B-tier ADAS, a heated steering wheel, ventilated and massaging seats, and a mini fridge. That's a lot of kit for 155,900 yuan.
The Battle Ahead: Seagull 06 vs. Qin Max
The Seagull 06 doesn't operate in a vacuum. Two days after its launch, BYD's Dynasty network unveiled the Qin Max—a car that shares the same platform, same dimensions, and same tech stack. The Qin Max also offers DM-i and EV options, with B-tier ADAS and the same battery. This is classic BYD: cannibalize your own lineup to prevent rivals from stealing market share. But it also raises a question—how do you differentiate two nearly identical cars?
BYD's answer is branding. The Seagull 06, sold under the Ocean network, targets younger families with a sportier design, rear-wheel drive, and punchier acceleration. The Qin Max, under Dynasty, plays it safe with a more conservative look and a reputation for reliability. Both will likely sell well, but the Seagull 06 has the tougher job: it needs to prove that a budget sedan can feel premium without breaking the bank.
The real test will be sales. The previous Seagull 06 peaked at 27,459 units in September 2025, but by June 2026, that number had fallen to 10,080. BYD hopes the new features—especially the AI-assisted driving—will lure buyers back. It's a bold bet, and if it works, it could set a new standard for what's possible in the mass market.
Why This Matters for AI in Cars
The Seagull 06 is more than just another EV. It's a signal that AI-powered self-driving is no longer the exclusive domain of luxury vehicles. By putting LiDAR and urban navigation assist into a car that costs less than $15,000, BYD is democratizing a technology that, until recently, was reserved for Teslas and Mercedes. This could accelerate the adoption of ADAS globally, forcing competitors to follow suit or lose ground.
For consumers, the takeaway is simple: if you're in the market for a family car, you no longer have to choose between price and intelligence. The Seagull 06 offers both. And for the industry, it's a wake-up call—AI in cars is becoming standard, not a premium add-on. The question now is how quickly other automakers can catch up.
